Do you know how the criminal justice system works? Do you know your rights? CIDAC wants more Mexicans to answer these questions, to be able to defend themselves against potential right violations and together, as a society, promote the enhancement in the procurement of justice, as well as a transition to a new criminal justice system. Support us!

According to the latest Survey on Criminal Justice System (2012), only 26% of the respondents at national level know if the new criminal justice system has already been applied at their state and about 40% are not aware of their rights if they are the victims of a crime (this changes to 41% in case of being the accused). This is why we seek your support as communication media by making public the video “Justice for Javier”, which shows, as several other cases in Mexico do, the injustice prevalent in a criminal process and how, owing to the delay of a new penal system, access to quality justice depends on random conditions such as the state one lives in.

Today, almost 5 years after the criminal law reform was approved, only 3 states fully operate it: Chihuahua, Morelos and the State of Mexico. There are only 3 years left in order to comply with the current deadline and this think tank considers essential to encourage the implementation, quality and functioning of this new system. A society informed about their rights and eager to receive the benefits that arise from the proper functioning of a new criminal justice system are the key to achieve this.

Help us prevent cases like Javier’s from happening again:

–    Share it in your social networks

–    Share it with the most influential Twitter users you follow. If you need help, you can always visit this website, which has several lists divided into several categories: http://twitter–‐mexico.com/

If you want to know more about the awareness of society regarding the penal system and particularly, about the new criminal justice system, here are some facts taken from the Survey on Criminal Justice System:

–    Only 1% of the respondents at national level consider a reform on the criminal justice system as the most important issue faced nowadays.

–    Only 11% of those surveyed at national level have heard about the 2008 Constitutional reform to create the new system.

–    In the State of Mexico, where the new justice system fully operates, barely 20% of the respondents know that it’s already taken place.

–    Baja California is the state where people are more confident on the criminal justice system, with a 2.3 grade out of a scale from 1 to 5. On the other hand, Mexico City ranks almost at the bottom of the table with a 1.9 grade and placed 29nd out of 32.
